Periodontal disease is a degenerative condition caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria infects and inflames the gum tissues, leading to the development of gum disease. The first and more mild stage is known as gingivitis and can usually be treated successfully. The more severe form of the disease is known as periodontitis and can often be controlled though not completely cured.
