Periodontal disease is a degenerative condition caused by harmful bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria infects and inflames the gum tissues, leading to the development of gum disease. If left untreated, it will eventually lead to gum recession, tooth loss and bone loss. Some common signs of gum disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed easily
  • Receding gums
  • Exposed tooth roots
  • Teeth that appear too long
  • Loose teeth
  • Pain when chewing
  • Bad breath
  • Pus between the teeth

Our dentist and team will look for these and other signs when examining your mouth. We may also use a periodontal probe, a small dental instrument used to measure the space between the teeth and gums. Once we have diagnosed you with gum disease, we will determine how severe the disease is before developing a treatment plan. There are two main types of gum disease. The first and more mild stage is known as gingivitis and can usually be treated successfully. The more severe form of the disease is known as periodontitis and can often be controlled though not completely cured.

The best way to avoid developing gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene at home and to keep all your regular dental appointments. This will minimize your risk of periodontal disease and help you maintain better oral health.
